“And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?”
Context: First, let’s understand the context of this verse. In the preceding verses (1 Samuel 6:13-19), the ark of the covenant had been returned to the Israelites by the Philistines. The Philistines had suffered from plagues and misfortunes after capturing the ark, so they decided to send it back to the Israelites. When the ark arrived at Beth-shemesh, the people rejoiced and offered sacrifices to the Lord.
Fearful Response: Upon seeing the ark and realizing it was the presence of the Lord, the people of Beth-shemesh were filled with fear and awe. They recognized the holiness and power of God and felt unworthy to be in His presence. They acknowledged that no one could stand before the holy Lord God without fear.
Reverence for God: The response of the men of Beth-shemesh reveals their deep reverence for God. They understood that God’s holiness demanded respect and reverence. This reverence stemmed from their understanding of the nature of God as holy and righteous, and they recognized their own inadequacy before Him.
Lessons for us:
- God’s holiness: The passage reminds us of the holiness of God. He is pure, perfect, and righteous. We should approach God with reverence and awe, acknowledging His holiness and giving Him the honor He deserves.
- Humility before God: Like the men of Beth-shemesh, we should recognize our own unworthiness before God. Our sinful nature highlights the vast difference between us and the holy God. Approaching God with humility helps us acknowledge our need for His mercy and grace.
- God’s presence: The ark represented the presence of God among His people. Similarly, as believers today, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Just as the people of Beth-shemesh experienced a mixture of fear and awe, we should also have a healthy fear of God’s presence while simultaneously being comforted by His love and grace.
Application:
- Worship with reverence: When we gather for worship, whether individually or as a community, let us approach God with reverence. Let our worship be characterized by awe and respect for His holiness.
- Humility in prayer: In our prayers, let us approach God with humility, acknowledging our own sinfulness and reliance on His mercy. Humbly present our needs and desires before Him, trusting in His faithfulness.
- God’s presence in our lives: Recognize the presence of God in our lives through the Holy Spirit. Let us be mindful of His holiness and strive to live in a way that honors Him, seeking to grow in righteousness and obedience.
Remember, 1 Samuel 6:20 serves as a reminder of the holiness and awe-inspiring nature of God. It teaches us to approach Him with reverence, humility, and a deep sense of awe.
