In 1 Samuel 16, the prophet Samuel mourns over Saul, whom God has rejected as king of Israel due to his disobedience. God instructs Samuel to fill a horn with oil and go to Bethlehem, where He has chosen one of Jesse’s sons to be anointed as the new king. Samuel is afraid of Saul’s reaction, but God assures him to carry out His plan discreetly.
Upon arriving in Bethlehem, Samuel invites Jesse and his sons to a sacrifice. When Samuel sees Eliab, Jesse’s eldest son, he assumes he is the chosen one, but God corrects him, stating that He looks at the heart, not outward appearance. One by one, Jesse presents his seven sons before Samuel, but none of them are chosen by God. Samuel asks if there are any more sons, and Jesse reveals that David, the youngest, is tending the sheep.
Samuel insists on seeing David, and when he arrives, God affirms that David is the one. Samuel anoints David in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon David from that day forward. However, Saul remains unaware of these events.
