1 Thessalonians 4:18

Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:18 (KJV)

Paul wrote this verse to conclude his teaching about believers who have died. In the preceding verses, he addresses the grief of the Thessalonian Christians over their departed loved ones, assuring them that they do not grieve like those who have no hope. He explains that the Lord will descend from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise first, and then the living believers will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air, and so they will always be with the Lord.

The word “wherefore” connects this verse directly to the promises just given. “These words” are not vague sentiments but the specific truths of Christ’s return and the resurrection of the dead. The command is mutual: believers are to comfort one another with these doctrines, especially in the face of death. This comfort is grounded in certainty, not wishful thinking, because it rests on the promise that the dead in Christ are with Him and will be raised, and that all believers will be reunited with Christ and with one another forever.

This verse calls believers to actively support one another in grief. The Christian community is to share in each other’s sorrows, offering encouragement based on the hope of Christ’s return. The power of words is evident here: speaking the promises of Scripture can bring solace and peace to those who struggle. Grief is natural, but it is to be moderated by hope, as Paul earlier said not to sorrow as those who have no hope. Believers are to persevere in faith, even in the face of loss, because their future reunion with Christ and with loved ones is certain.

How often do we turn to the truths of the resurrection when we face loss? This verse invites us to let the doctrine of Christ’s return shape our comfort for others and our own hearts. The hope of being forever with the Lord is the ultimate source of consolation, and it is a hope we are called to share with one another.
