1 Thessalonians 4:8
He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 4:8 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to the Thessalonian believers about holy living and brotherly love. In the preceding verses, he has given specific instructions on how to live in a way that pleases God. This verse concludes that section with a solemn warning about how those instructions are received.
Meaning
The Greek word translated “despiseth” (ἀθετῶν) means to reject, disregard, or treat with contempt. Paul is not speaking of a casual neglect but of a deliberate setting aside of what God has commanded. When someone rejects these instructions, they are not merely dismissing human teaching; they are rejecting God Himself, because the commands come from Him.
The verse then reminds believers that God “hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit is a gift given to those who belong to God through Christ. He dwells within believers, guiding, empowering, and transforming them to live in a way that honours God. The Spirit’s presence is both a privilege and a responsibility, for He enables the very holiness that God commands.
Biblical connections
This warning echoes the Old Testament pattern where rejecting the message of God’s prophets was equivalent to rejecting God Himself, because the prophets spoke by the Spirit of God. In the same way, Paul’s instruction carries divine authority, not merely human opinion.
Application
When we disregard God’s commands, we are not challenging human authority but the authority of God Himself. This truth calls us to approach His instructions with reverence and obedience. The Holy Spirit, who is holy, works in us to sanctify us, and to reject God’s commands is to spurn the Spirit who empowers holy living.
Reflection
God’s commands are not arbitrary; they are backed by His authority and His indwelling Spirit. As believers, we are to take seriously our relationship with God, honouring His instructions and recognising the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. By doing so, we demonstrate our love and gratitude for the gift of the Spirit and honour the authority of God in our lives.
