1 Thessalonians 5:9

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Thessalonians 5:9 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote his first letter to the Thessalonians to address their concerns about the return of Christ and the fate of believers who had died before His coming. He reassures the Thessalonians about God’s plan for believers and emphasizes their eternal destiny of salvation.

The phrase “appointed us to wrath” refers to the righteous judgment, punishment, and eternal condemnation against sin that will come upon those who reject God’s salvation. It highlights that God’s deliberate plan for believers does not involve facing His wrath. While all people are by nature deserving of God’s wrath due to sin, believers are not destined for this eternal punishment.

Instead, the contrast is drawn “to obtain salvation”. God’s desire for His people is deliverance from sin and its consequences, including forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life with Him.

This is accomplished “by our Lord Jesus Christ”. Jesus Christ is the central figure and the only means by which we obtain salvation. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus paid the price for our sins. By accepting Him as Lord and Savior, we receive the gift of salvation and escape the righteous anger of God.

This truth underscores the distinguishing grace of God toward His people. Because this salvation is not based on human merit but is obtained entirely through the person and work of Jesus Christ, we can rest confidently in what He has accomplished. This verse serves as a powerful encouragement, reminding believers that their future is secure in Christ.
