1 Timothy 1:8

But we know that the Law is good, if a man vse it lawfully. 1 Timothy 1:8 (KJV)

In the surrounding verses Paul confronts false teachers who were promoting erroneous doctrines and engaging in fruitless discussions. He then affirms the purpose of the law and stresses its proper use. The law Paul refers to is the Mosaic law, the commandments and regulations given by God to Israel. It serves several purposes: it reveals God’s standard of righteousness, exposes sin, convicts people of their need for a Savior, and provides guidelines for moral conduct and righteous living (see Romans 7:7‑12; Galatians 3:24).

Paul emphasizes that the law must be used lawfully. This means applying it in accordance with God’s intentions—promoting justice, righteousness, and pointing people to Christ—rather than misusing it for self‑righteousness or legalistic gain. Throughout the New Testament we see examples of misuse: some Jewish leaders used the law to elevate themselves (Matthew 23:1‑4), while others tried to earn salvation through strict observance, neglecting faith in Christ (Galatians 2:16). Such misuse leads to legalism, spiritual pride, and a failure to recognize God’s grace.

The proper use of the law has three key functions. First, it leads us to recognize our sinful nature and our need for a Savior (Romans 3:20). Second, it serves as a guide for righteous living, helping believers understand God’s moral standards (Romans 7:12). Third, it helps expose and restrain sinful behavior in society, promoting justice and order (1 Timothy 1:9‑10).

While the law has its rightful place, believers are no longer under its condemnation but under grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23‑25). Christ fulfilled the law’s requirements on our behalf, freeing us from its curse (Galatians 3:13‑14).

Application: As believers we should approach the law with a proper understanding, using it to draw closer to God and to live according to His principles. We must guard against legalism, recognizing that salvation rests on God’s grace through faith in Christ, not on our works. Relying on the Holy Spirit’s guidance helps us apply the law’s principles wisely, discerning right from wrong, honoring God, and promoting justice in society. Remember, the law is a valuable tool when used lawfully and in accordance with God’s purposes.
