These people were eager for the title and recognition of being rabbis or doctors of the law, seeking applause for their skill in interpreting and expounding it. However, their desire was not matched by true understanding; they made bold claims without grasping the substance of what they taught. The problem is not the law itself, which Paul clarifies is good when used lawfully (1 Timothy 1:8), but the teachers’ ignorance and misplaced motives.
