Context

The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Timothy to his young protégé, Timothy, who was leading the church at Ephesus. In this passage, Paul addresses the dangers of the love of money and the importance of contentment. He has just explained that godliness with contentment is great gain, and this verse grounds that teaching in a simple, universal truth about human life.

Meaning

Paul states two certainties. First, we brought nothing into this world at birth. Second, it is certain we can carry nothing out at death. These twin facts expose the temporary nature of material possessions. Wealth, comfort, and security are fleeting and transient, while our entrance and exit from this world are marked by absolute poverty. This truth is a quieting consideration under loss or lack, reminding believers that earthly wealth is temporary and that our current possessions are already more than we had at birth.

This teaching echoes the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 5:15, which observes that as a person comes from his mother’s womb, naked shall he return, taking nothing of his labour with him.
