2 Chronicles 15:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And there was no more war unto the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to examine the context in which it is found. The Book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, and this verse refers to the reign of King Asa. Asa was a righteous king who sought to reform the nation of Judah and bring them back to the worship of the Lord.

Spiritual Renewal:Prior to the events mentioned in verse 19, King Asa led the people in a spiritual revival. He removed the idols and foreign altars from the land and commanded the people to seek the Lord with all their heart (2 Chronicles 15:8-15). As a result, the people made a covenant to seek God diligently, and the Lord responded by giving them rest from their enemies.

No More War:The verse states that there was no more war in the land for thirty‑five years during the reign of Asa. This period of peace and security was a direct result of the spiritual renewal and faithfulness of the people. When they turned away from idols and devoted themselves to God, He rewarded them by granting peace.

Application:The account of King Asa and the cessation of war offers several lessons for us today:

  • Prioritize Spiritual Renewal:Just as Asa removed the idols and led the people in seeking God, we should prioritise our relationship with God and eliminate anything that hinders our devotion to Him.
  • God’s Blessings:When we are faithful to God and seek Him wholeheartedly, He blesses us with His peace and protection. While this doesn’t necessarily mean we will never face physical battles, it assures us of His presence and guidance through the challenges of life.
  • The Power of Covenant:Asa made a covenant with the people to seek the Lord, and this commitment brought about great blessings. We can enter into a covenant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and in doing so, we can experience His peace and victory in our lives.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 15:19 highlights the connection between spiritual renewal and the cessation of war. King Asa’s dedication to God and the removal of idols resulted in a period of peace for the nation. This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking God wholeheartedly and the blessings that come with it.
