2 Chronicles 17:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And Iehoshaphat waxed great exceedingly, and he built in Iudah castles, and cities of store. 2 Chronicles 17:12 (KJV)

Context: 2 Chronicles 17 records the reign of Jehoshaphat, a righteous king of Judah who followed the ways of the Lord and sought to bring spiritual reform to the nation. This verse specifically highlights Jehoshaphat’s accomplishments in building castles and cities of store in Judah.

Jehoshaphat’s Greatness: The verse begins by stating that Jehoshaphat “waxed great exceedingly.” This indicates that he experienced remarkable prosperity and success during his reign. His greatness was not limited to military victories or political power; it encompassed various aspects of his leadership, including provision for his people.

Building Castles: Castles were fortified structures typically built to provide protection and defence during times of war or conflict. By constructing castles, Jehoshaphat aimed to strengthen the defences of the land and ensure the safety of his people. This reflects his dedication to the welfare and security of the kingdom.

Cities of Store: In addition to castles, Jehoshaphat also built cities of store. These cities were likely strategic locations where supplies and provisions were stored, serving as centres for the collection and distribution of essential resources such as food, water, and other necessities. Establishing these cities emphasized his desire that the kingdom be well‑prepared and equipped to withstand future challenges or crises.

Spiritual Significance: While the verse primarily focuses on infrastructure and security, it is essential to remember the underlying spiritual context. Jehoshaphat was a righteous king who sought to bring the people of Judah closer to God. By fortifying the land and establishing a system for provisioning, he not only protected his people physically but also created an environment conducive to spiritual growth and stability.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 17:12 portrays Jehoshaphat as a capable leader who prioritized the well‑being and security of his kingdom. His endeavours to build castles and cities of store were not solely for material gain but were intended to strengthen the nation and provide for the needs of the people.
