2 Chronicles 18:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

Againe he sayd; Therefore heare the word of the Lord: I sawe the Lord sitting vpon his throne, and all the hoste of heauen standing on his right hand, and on his left. 2 Chronicles 18:18 (KJV)

Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the LORD; I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.

Historical context: The book of 2 Chronicles records the spiritual and religious activities of the kings of Judah. In chapter 18 we read of the alliance between King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah and their decision to go to war against Ramoth‑gilead. The quoted verse, however, is taken from 1 Kings 22:19, where the prophet Micaiah reports a vision of the Lord’s throne.

Seeking Godly counsel: Before undertaking any major decision, the passage underscores the necessity of seeking Godly counsel. Jehoshaphat urges the kings to inquire of the Lord, and they turn to a prophet for guidance. Consulting a prophet or spiritual advisor can provide insight that prevents unwise choices, and Jehoshaphat’s example teaches the importance of relying on divine direction in our decision‑making processes.

The word of the Lord: In response to the request for divine direction, Micaiah delivers a message from the Lord. He describes a vision in which he saw the Lord seated on His throne, with the host of heaven standing on His right hand and on His left. This vivid image conveys God’s supreme authority and power, emphasizing that He is the ultimate authority in heaven and on earth, whose counsel must be heeded above all others.

God’s sovereignty and omniscience: Micaiah’s vision reveals the Lord’s sovereignty and omniscience. By sitting on His throne, God demonstrates supreme control over all things. The heavenly host positioned on His right and left symbolizes the angelic beings who serve and worship Him, reminding believers that nothing occurs outside of God’s knowledge and providence.

The importance of listening to God: The phrase “Therefore hear the word of the LORD” stresses the need to listen to God’s message. Micaiah warns the kings that they will be defeated if they proceed with their plans. Ahab ultimately disregards the warning and suffers the foretold consequences, illustrating the peril of ignoring divine instruction.

Application to our lives: Believers are called to emulate this passage by earnestly seeking God’s counsel, attentively listening to His word, and submitting to His authority. God’s wisdom and guidance are essential for making prudent decisions and avoiding harmful outcomes. We should prioritize aligning our lives with God’s will and humbly submit to His plan, recognizing that His ways are higher than ours.
