And the house which I build, is great: for great is our God aboue all gods. 2 Chronicles 2:5 (KJV)

is

our God above all gods. 2 Chronicles 2:5 (KJV)

The book of 2 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and records the history of the kings of Judah. In the surrounding verses King Solomon sends a message to Hiram, the king of Tyre, requesting skilled workers and materials for the temple project—a correspondence also noted in 1 Kings 5. Solomon speaks of the grandeur of the house he is constructing, emphasizing its significance as the future dwelling of the Lord.

The verse declares that the house is great because great is our God above all gods. This statement affirms the sovereignty and supremacy of the God of Israel over the many deities worshiped by surrounding nations, underscoring the belief that the God of Israel is the one true God.

Implications for believers are clear. As believers we are called to recognize and worship the one true God. Just as Solomon acknowledged God’s greatness, we should acknowledge God’s supremacy and offer Him our worship and devotion. The passage also reminds us of God’s omnipotence—He is not limited or confined, but greater than any challenge, circumstance, or opposing force we may encounter. Moreover, the text stresses God’s preeminence over all gods, warning that philosophies, ideologies, and idols constantly vie for our attention, yet only the living God deserves our utmost loyalty.

Application follows naturally. Take time to praise and worship God for His greatness, reflecting on His attributes and thanking Him for being above all other gods. When faced with difficulties or uncertainties, remind yourself of God’s greatness and trust in His power to help you overcome. Guard against idolatry by being mindful of anything that competes with God’s rightful place in your life, and seek to remove any idols or distractions that hinder your relationship with Him. Studying the Bible is a continual process of seeking God’s wisdom and applying His truths in our daily walk.
