2 Chronicles 2:6
But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heauen, and heauen of heauens cannot conteine him? who am I then that I should build him an house? saue onely to burne sacrifice before him? 2 Chronicles 2:6 (KJV)
In this verse King Solomon is addressing Hiram, king of Tyre, as he seeks assistance for the construction of the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. Solomon’s words reveal a profound awareness of God’s infinite majesty and the inadequacy of any human effort to fully contain or honor Him. He declares that even the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain God, underscoring the incomprehensibility of the Divine.
Solomon’s confession is a model of humility. He recognizes his own insignificance in comparison to the Almighty and admits that he cannot build a house that truly contains God’s presence. This humility points believers to a proper attitude of reverence and dependence on God’s grace rather than on human achievement.
The purpose of the temple, as Solomon implies, is to provide a focal point for worship and a gathering place for the people to bring their offerings. While the physical structure facilitated sacrificial worship, its broader purpose was to unite the community in honoring God. The act of offering burnt sacrifices symbolized the people’s surrender and devotion, a theme that finds its New Testament fulfillment in the call to present our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). Our worship today is not confined to a building but is expressed through daily actions, attitudes, and sincere devotion.
Reflecting on the greatness of God invites believers to meditate on His vastness and the fact that nothing in this world can contain Him. Such contemplation deepens awe and fosters a richer relationship with the Divine. Recognizing that it is only by God’s mercy and love that we may approach Him should cultivate gratitude and a desire to worship with sincerity.
