2 Chronicles 20:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 20 records the account of King Jehoshaphat of Judah and how he faced a great military threat from a coalition of enemy nations. Recognising his dependence on God, Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast and sought the Lord’s guidance. The Lord assured him of victory and instructed him not to be afraid, for the battle was not his, but God’s. As the army of Judah went out to face their enemies, they witnessed a miraculous intervention from God, resulting in the defeat of their foes.

  • Returning to Jerusalem:

After their triumphant victory over their enemies, the people of Judah, led by Jehoshaphat, returned to Jerusalem. This return signifies the completion of their mission and the safe journey back to their capital city. It also symbolises a return to a place of security and the restoration of peace. Their joy was evident because God had given them the victory, and they were able to rejoice over their enemies.

Rejoicing over their enemies: The phrase “the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies” highlights the divine intervention and the ultimate source of their victory. God had fought on their behalf, demonstrating His faithfulness and power. The people of Judah rejoiced not only because they had been spared from harm but also because their enemies had been defeated. This victory brought them a sense of joy and relief, as well as a recognition of God’s faithfulness.

Lessons and Application:

  • Dependence on God: Jehoshaphat’s response to the threat was to seek the Lord’s guidance through prayer and fasting. This reminds us of the importance of relying on God in times of trouble. Instead of relying solely on our own strength or resources, we should acknowledge our dependence on God and seek His direction.
  • God’s faithfulness: The victory of Judah over their enemies demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His people. It reminds us that God is always with us and fights our battles when we trust in Him. In our own lives, we can take comfort in the knowledge that God is faithful and can bring victory in the face of adversity.
  • Rejoicing in God’s deliverance: The joy experienced by the people of Judah stemmed from the recognition that it was God who had brought them the victory. Similarly, we can find joy in knowing that God is our deliverer. When we experience victories in our lives, whether big or small, we should give thanks and rejoice in God’s faithfulness.
  • Trusting God in uncertain times: The story of Jehoshaphat’s victory reminds us that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, we can trust in God’s power and provision. Just as God granted victory to the people of Judah, He can also provide solutions and guidance for us when we face challenges.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 20:27 highlights the return of the people of Judah to Jerusalem with joy after their victory over their enemies. It emphasises the role of God in their triumph and reminds us of the importance of depending on God, rejoicing in His deliverance, and trusting Him in uncertain times.
