2 Chronicles 20:26

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 20:26 is part of the narrative about King Jehoshaphat of Judah. During his reign, Jehoshaphat faced a great threat from an alliance of enemy nations. In response, he sought the Lord’s help and led the people in prayer and fasting. God answered their prayer and assured them of victory.

The Valley of Berachah: After receiving God’s promise of victory, Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah assembled in the valley of Berachah. The word “Berachah” means blessing or praise. This valley became a significant place where they praised and blessed the Lord for His faithfulness and deliverance.

Worship and Thanksgiving: The assembly in the valley of Berachah highlights the importance of worship and thanksgiving in response to God’s faithfulness. The people recognised that their victory came from the Lord, and they responded with praise and gratitude. It serves as a reminder for us to express our thanksgiving and worship to God when He works in our lives.

Naming the Place: The name “The valley of Berachah” was given to commemorate the events that took place there. It served as a memorial to God’s faithfulness and the victory He granted to His people. This naming practice is seen throughout the Bible, where locations are named to preserve the memory of significant events or encounters with God.

Application: The account of the valley of Berachah teaches us several important lessons:

  • Trust in God: Just as Jehoshaphat trusted in God’s promises, we should rely on the Lord in times of trouble and seek His guidance and deliverance.
  • Prayer and Fasting: Jehoshaphat’s response of prayer and fasting demonstrates the power of seeking God’s face through these spiritual disciplines.
  • Worship and Thanksgiving: When God answers our prayers and grants us victory, it is essential to respond with worship and gratitude. Let us remember to acknowledge His faithfulness in our lives.
  • Memorializing God’s Work: The naming of the valley reminds us to preserve and share the testimonies of God’s faithfulness in our lives, so future generations can learn and be encouraged.
