2 Chronicles 20:32

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD”

Context:This verse is part of the historical account of Jehoshaphat, the fourth king of Judah. Jehoshaphat reigned for 25 years and is remembered as a king who sought the Lord and led his people in righteousness. In the preceding verses (2 Chronicles 20:1-30), Jehoshaphat faced a great military threat from a vast alliance of Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites. However, he sought God’s guidance, and the Lord delivered a miraculous victory to Judah without them even having to fight.

Walking in the way of Asa:

  • Jehoshaphat is commended for following the example of his father Asa. Asa was also a righteous king who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord (2 Chronicles 14:2).
  • This implies that Jehoshaphat did not deviate from the path of righteousness and sought to maintain the reforms and obedience to God established by his father.

Doing what is right in the sight of the Lord:

  • Jehoshaphat’s commitment to righteousness is emphasized. He lived a life that was pleasing to God and aligned with His commands.
  • This includes promoting worship of the true God, removing idolatry from the land, and enforcing the Law of Moses among the people.

Lessons we can learn from this verse:

Influence of godly examples:Jehoshaphat was influenced by the righteous example set by his father, Asa. This highlights the importance of godly role models in our lives. Surrounding ourselves with people who walk in the ways of the Lord can inspire and encourage us to pursue righteousness.

Consistency in obedience:Jehoshaphat did not depart from the righteous path set by his father. He remained steadfast in his commitment to God and His commands. Similarly, we should strive to maintain consistency in our obedience to God, not wavering in our faith even in the face of challenges or opposition.

Pleasing God in our actions:Jehoshaphat’s desire was to do what was right in the sight of the Lord. As believers, our ultimate aim should be to please God with our actions and live in accordance with His will. This requires seeking His guidance, studying His Word, and aligning our lives with His principles.
