2 Chronicles 20:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.”

Context and Background:2 Chronicles 20:31 is part of the account of Jehoshaphat’s reign as the king of Judah. Jehoshaphat was the son of Asa and the fourth king of Judah after the division of the kingdom. He followed in the ways of his father and sought the Lord. This verse provides some details about Jehoshaphat’s age, length of reign, and his mother’s name.

Jehoshaphat’s Age:The verse mentions that Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he began to reign. This information helps us understand the timeline and gives us an idea of his youth and relative inexperience when he ascended to the throne.

Length of Jehoshaphat’s Reign:The verse also states that Jehoshaphat reigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. This provides insight into the stability and longevity of his reign. Throughout this period, he implemented various reforms and sought to lead the people of Judah in obedience to God’s law.

Azubah, Jehoshaphat’s Mother:The verse mentions Jehoshaphat’s mother’s name, Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi. While the Bible doesn’t provide much information about Azubah, this reference highlights her connection to Jehoshaphat and establishes his lineage.

  • Faithfulness and Stability:Jehoshaphat’s long reign of twenty-five years demonstrates his commitment to leading Judah in accordance with God’s law. It serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness and stability in leadership and our personal lives.
  • Age and Leadership:Jehoshaphat’s ascension to the throne at the age of thirty-five serves as a reminder that age is not always a barrier to effective leadership. Even at a relatively young age, Jehoshaphat displayed wisdom and sought the Lord, leading Judah in a godly manner.
  • Acknowledging Family:While the focus of the verse is on Jehoshaphat’s reign, it takes a moment to mention his mother, Azubah. This highlights the significance of acknowledging and honoring our family members and recognizing the role they play in our lives.
  • God’s Sovereignty:The overall story of Jehoshaphat’s reign, which includes victories in battles and reliance to God, reminds us of God’s sovereignty and how He can work through leaders who trust in Him. Jehoshaphat’s example encourages us to seek God’s guidance and trust in His power in our own lives.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 20:31 provides historical context and highlights the reign of Jehoshaphat, emphasizing his faithfulness, stability, and the importance of acknowledging family relationships. It offers valuable lessons that can be applied to our own lives today.
