2 Chronicles 20:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And they dwelt therein, and haue built thee a Sanctuarie therein for thy Name, saying, 2 Chronicles 20:8 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, who faced a great multitude of enemies that had come against him. He turned to God for help and gathered the people together to seek the Lord’s guidance and deliverance.

Seeking God’s Presence: King Jehoshaphat recognized the importance of having God’s presence among the people. He acknowledges that the sanctuary built for the Lord’s name is a symbol of His dwelling place, demonstrating the significance of seeking God’s presence and establishing a place for worship and reverence.

The Importance of Prayer: Before going into battle, Jehoshaphat gathered the people and prayed to God, acknowledging His power and seeking His intervention. This emphasizes the importance of prayer in times of trouble and of seeking God’s guidance in making decisions.

Recognizing God’s Sovereignty: In his prayer, Jehoshaphat affirmed God’s sovereignty and power over all nations, declaring that God is the ruler of all kingdoms and that no one can stand against Him. This reminds us of the greatness and majesty of God, who holds ultimate authority and control over all things.

Remembering God’s Promises: Jehoshaphat recalled the promises God made to His people, remembering how God had driven out the nations from the land and gave it to the descendants of Abraham, His friend. This serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the importance of recalling His promises during challenging times.

Trusting in God’s Deliverance: Despite overwhelming odds and the impending battle, Jehoshaphat placed his trust in God for deliverance, declaring his reliance on God’s power and acknowledging that victory comes from the Lord. This teaches the importance of placing our trust in God, even when challenges seem insurmountable.

Application:

As the sanctuary was built for God’s name, we should seek God’s presence and establish a place of worship in our lives—making time for prayer, meditation, and study of God’s Word. When facing challenges, turn to God in prayer, seeking His guidance and intervention, trusting that He hears our prayers and provides comfort and wisdom. Regularly remind yourself of the promises of God found in Scripture; His faithfulness and love are constant, and reflecting on His promises strengthens faith and trust. Regardless of circumstances, put your trust in God, who is capable of overcoming any obstacle or enemy, and have confidence that the ultimate victory belongs to the Lord. For deeper insight, consider reading the entire chapter of 2 Chronicles 20 to grasp the full context and message of this passage.
