2 Chronicles 21:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that discusses the reign of Jehoram, who was the son of King Jehoshaphat and the fifth king of Judah. Let’s explore the context and key lessons from this verse.

Background:At this point in Israel’s history, the kingdom was divided into two parts: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Jehoram became the king of Judah after the death of his father, Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was a righteous king who sought to follow the ways of the Lord, but Jehoram did not follow in his father’s footsteps and instead embraced evil practices.

The age and duration of Jehoram’s reign:According to the verse, Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he ascended to the throne in Jerusalem. He reigned for a total of eight years. The mention of his age and the duration of his reign provides historical context.

Lessons from the verse:

  • Responsibility and Leadership:Jehoram was entrusted with the responsibility of leading God’s people as their king. This verse highlights the importance of leaders taking up their roles at the right time. It reminds us that leadership carries a weight of responsibility, and leaders should strive to fulfill their duties faithfully and wisely.
  • The Consequences of Evil Choices:Although this verse doesn’t explicitly mention Jehoram’s evil actions, subsequent verses reveal that he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and led Judah astray by promoting idol worship and other detestable practices. As a result, Jehoram faced severe consequences and experienced the judgment of God on his reign. This serves as a warning about the destructive consequences of turning away from God’s commands and pursuing wickedness.
  • The Importance of Faithfulness:Jehoram’s unfaithfulness to God’s ways and his promotion of idolatry led to the spiritual decline of the kingdom. This verse underscores the significance of remaining faithful to God and His commandments. It highlights the need for leaders and individuals to follow God wholeheartedly and lead by example, for their choices have a profound impact on those they influence.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 21:2 provides historical context about Jehoram’s reign as the king of Judah and highlights the importance of responsibility, the consequences of evil choices, and the need for faithfulness in leadership. It reminds us to seek God’s guidance and strive to walk in His ways, both as leaders and as individuals.
