2 Chronicles 21:1

Listen to this article

“Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.”

Historical Context:2 Chronicles is a book in the Old Testament that provides a historical account of the kings of Judah. This particular verse marks a transition in leadership from Jehoshaphat to his son Jehoram.

  • Jehoshaphat’s Legacy:

Jehoshaphat was one of the notable kings of Judah. He was known for his faithfulness to God and his efforts to bring religious reforms to the nation. He sought the Lord and walked in His ways, and as a result, God blessed him and the kingdom experienced peace and prosperity during his reign. Jehoshaphat’s faith and commitment to God served as an example for future generations.

The Succession of Jehoram:After Jehoshaphat’s death, his son Jehoram assumed the throne. Unfortunately, Jehoram did not follow in his father’s footsteps. He married a daughter of King Ahab and Jezebel, who were known for their idolatry and wickedness. This alliance led Jehoram to adopt the idolatrous practices of his in‑laws and caused him to turn away from the Lord.

Consequences of Jehoram’s Reign:The subsequent verses in 2 Chronicles 21 describe the consequences of Jehoram’s evil reign. Because of his idolatry and leading the people astray, God brought judgment upon Jehoram and the kingdom of Judah. Edom revolted against Judah’s rule, and Jehoram’s own family faced tragic consequences, including the death of all his sons except for one.

Lessons to Learn:

  • a) The importance of choosing godly leaders:Jehoshaphat’s reign exemplified the blessings that come from following God’s ways. However, the contrast with his son Jehoram’s reign highlights the destructive consequences of ungodly leadership. We should prioritise choosing leaders who fear God and seek His guidance.
  • b) The danger of compromising with ungodly influences:Jehoram’s marriage alliance with Ahab’s family resulted in his adoption of their idolatrous practices. It serves as a warning that aligning ourselves with ungodly influences can lead us away from God and bring negative consequences into our lives.
  • c) The impact of personal choices:Despite having a godly father, Jehoram made the decision to turn away from the Lord. This emphasises the personal responsibility each individual has to walk in righteousness and make choices that honour God, regardless of their upbringing or the examples set before them.
  • d) The consequences of disobedience:Jehoram’s disobedience had severe repercussions. This serves as a reminder that God is just, and He will hold us accountable for our actions. It is important to repent, turn back to God, and seek His forgiveness when we go astray.
