2 Chronicles 22:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah, sawe that her sonne was dead, shee arose, and destroyed all the seed royall of the house of Iudah. 2 Chronicles 22:10 (KJV)

This verse is part of the historical account of the divided kingdom, specifically focusing on the southern kingdom of Judah. To fully understand the significance of 2 Chronicles 22:10, it’s helpful to provide some background context. During this time, the kingdom was divided into two separate entities: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Ahaziah reigned over the southern kingdom of Judah. He was the son of Jehoram and the grandson of Jehoshaphat. Ahaziah’s reign was relatively short, lasting only one year. He followed in the wicked ways of his parents, practising idolatry and forsaking the Lord (2 Chronicles 22:2-4). In the preceding verses, it is revealed that Ahaziah was fatally wounded in battle while he was visiting King Joram of Israel. When his mother, Athaliah, learned of his death, she seized the opportunity to gain power for herself. She was a daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, who were infamous for their evil actions and idolatrous practices. Athaliah’s ambition led her to commit an atrocious act mentioned in 2 Chronicles 22:10. The verse states that Athaliah, upon hearing of her son’s death, arose and “destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.” This means that she sought to eliminate any potential heirs to the throne of Judah. By doing so, she aimed to secure her own position as queen and prevent anyone else from ascending to power. Athaliah’s actions were driven by her desire for power and control. However, her actions were wicked and contrary to God’s plan for the lineage of David. The house of David was divinely appointed to carry on the lineage that would eventually lead to the birth of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. It’s important to note that this verse reflects the consequences of the ongoing spiritual decline in the kingdom of Judah. The rulers and people had turned away from God, leading to a decline in moral values and a disregard for God’s commands. Athaliah’s ruthless act serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of sin and the lengths to which people can go when they reject God’s ways. While this verse may appear disheartening, it sets the stage for future events. Despite Athaliah’s attempt to eliminate the royal lineage, God had a plan to preserve the Davidic line. A young infant named Joash, who was a descendant of David, was secretly rescued from Athaliah’s murderous rampage by his aunt Jehosheba and her husband, Jehoiada the priest. Joash was hidden in the temple for six years until he was old enough to be crowned king. The story of Joash’s preservation and eventual ascension to the throne reveals God’s sovereignty and faithfulness in preserving His chosen line. It also demonstrates that even in the darkest times, God can bring forth hope and redemption. In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 22:10 highlights the evil deeds of Athaliah, who sought to eliminate the seed royal of Judah. Her actions reflect the consequences of a nation that had turned away from God. However, God, in His providence, preserved the Davidic line through the actions of faithful individuals. This story reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His ability to bring redemption out of the most desperate circumstances.
