2 Chronicles 22:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And he returned to bee healed in Iezreel, because of the wounds which were giuen him at Ramah when hee fought with Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the sonne of Iehoram king of Iudah, went downe to see Iehoram the sonne of Ahab at Iezreel, because he was sicke. 2 Chronicles 22:6 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 22:6 provides historical context and records a significant episode in the life of King Ahaziah of Judah. To understand the verse better, we must consider the background and the key figures involved.

During this period the nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Ahaziah was a ruler of Judah, the son of Jehoram (also called Joram) who had reigned before him. Jehoram was married to Athaliah, the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of the northern kingdom, linking the two royal houses.

The verse itself states that Ahaziah went down to see Jehoram, the son of Ahab, at Jezreel because he was sick. It also records that Jehoram of Israel had been wounded in battle with Hazael, king of Syria, at Ramah and had returned to Jezreel to seek healing. Ahaziah’s journey to Jezreel therefore reflects the close political alliance and familial ties between Judah and Israel.

These alliances had tragic consequences. The prophet Jehu was anointed to bring God’s judgment on the house of Ahab. In the course of that judgment Jehu killed both Ahaziah of Judah and Joram of Israel (see 2 Kings 9:27‑28; 2 Kings 10:13‑14). This episode illustrates the turbulent political dynamics of the time and the severe outcome of aligning oneself with a corrupt royal line.

By studying this passage we gain insight into the historical relationships between the two kingdoms and are reminded of the importance of aligning ourselves with godly principles rather than compromising our faith by associating with evil influences.
