2 Chronicles 22:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And the destruction of Ahaziah was of God by comming to Ioram: For when he was come, hee went out with Iehoram against Iehu the sonne of Nimshi, whome the Lord had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab. 2 Chronicles 22:7 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of the reign of Ahaziah, who was a king of the southern kingdom of Judah. Ahaziah was the son of King Jehoram and Queen Athaliah. After the death of his father, Ahaziah became the king of Judah, but his reign was short‑lived. This verse explains the events that led to his destruction.

The Reign of Ahab: To understand the background of this verse, it is important to know about the reign of Ahab. Ahab was a king of the northern kingdom of Israel and was notorious for his wickedness. He married Jezebel, who led him and the nation into idolatry and turned away from the worship of the true God. Ahab’s reign was marked by disobedience to God’s commands.

Jehu’s Anointing: God had appointed Jehu, the son of Nimshi, to carry out judgment upon the house of Ahab due to their evil ways. Jehu was anointed by a prophet named Elisha to become the king of Israel and to execute God’s judgment on the wicked dynasty of Ahab (1 Kings 19:15–17; 2 Kings 9:1–13).

Ahaziah’s Alliance: Ahaziah, the king of Judah, formed an alliance with Jehoram, the king of Israel (the northern kingdom). They went out together against Jehu, who was executing God’s judgment on the house of Ahab.

Divine Judgment: The verse states that Ahaziah’s destruction was from God. By aligning himself with Jehoram, who was opposing Jehu, Ahaziah put himself in a position that invited divine judgment. Ahaziah’s support for the wicked dynasty of Ahab and his alliance against God’s appointed agent, Jehu, led to his downfall.

God’s Sovereignty: This verse highlights the sovereignty of God over the affairs of nations and individuals. God had determined to bring judgment upon the house of Ahab, and Ahaziah became a casualty of that judgment due to his alignment with the wicked.

Consequences of Ungodly Alliances: Ahaziah’s alliance with Jehoram, who was part of a godless dynasty, resulted in his own destruction. It serves as a reminder to be cautious about the company we keep and the alliances we form, as they can influence our own actions and outcomes.

Judgment for Disobedience: Ahaziah’s destruction reflects the biblical principle that disobedience to God’s commands carries consequences. The wickedness of Ahab and his family led to their downfall, serving as a warning against rebelling against God’s will.

The Role of God’s Anointed: Jehu, anointed by God, carried out God’s judgment upon the house of Ahab. This demonstrates that God often works through chosen individuals to accomplish His purposes and execute His judgment.
