2 Chronicles 22:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“But he also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counselor to do wickedly.”

This verse is a part of the historical account of the kings of Judah. To understand its significance, let’s provide some context: At the time of this verse, the kingdom of Israel was divided into two: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. 2 Chronicles focuses primarily on the kings of Judah.

In this particular passage, we learn about Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram, who became king of Judah. Ahaziah’s mother was Athaliah, the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel. Ahab and Jezebel were known for their wickedness and idolatry, leading Israel astray from the worship of the one true God.

The verse states that Ahaziah “walked in the ways of the house of Ahab.” This means that he followed the practices and customs of his mother’s family, which were deeply influenced by the idolatrous practices of Ahab and Jezebel.

The phrase “his mother was his counselor to do wickedly” indicates that Athaliah played a significant role in shaping Ahaziah’s worldview and influencing him to engage in evil practices.

Instead of leading him toward the worship of God, she guided him in the ways of idolatry and disobedience.

This verse serves as a warning about the influence of ungodly counsel and the importance of choosing our advisors wisely. Ahaziah’s close association with his mother, who had embraced idolatry and wickedness, had a detrimental effect on his own spiritual life and leadership.

As we consider this passage, it reminds us of the vital role parents and mentors play in shaping the beliefs and actions of those under their guidance. It highlights the need for godly counsel and the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who will lead us closer to God and His ways.

Furthermore, this verse serves as a cautionary example for us today. It reminds us to be discerning about the counsel we receive, ensuring that it aligns with God’s Word and principles. We should seek guidance from mature believers who are committed to following God and His commandments.
