Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.

Context

This verse records the reign of King Ahaziah of Judah. He was the son of Jehoram and Athaliah, and Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel of Israel. This marriage alliance brought the wicked influence of Ahab’s house into Judah’s royal family.

Ahaziah did evil in the Lord’s sight, just as Ahab’s household did. The reason is clear: after his father died, Ahab’s family became his counselors. Their advice led him into idolatry and eventually to his destruction. The parallel account in 2 Kings 8:27 confirms this judgment. Their counsel was bad in both religious and civil matters, so his ruin was not merely personal but also political.
