2 Chronicles 23:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him.”

Historical Context:To better understand 2 Chronicles 23:1, it’s important to consider its historical context. This verse is part of the account of the reign of Joash, a righteous king of Judah. Prior to this, Athaliah, the wicked queen mother, had usurped the throne and had executed all potential heirs to secure her rule. However, Jehoiada the priest, the husband of one of King Ahaziah’s daughters, preserved Joash, the only remaining heir, and hid him in the temple for six years.

Jehoiada’s Strengthening:In the seventh year, Jehoiada, the high priest, strengthened himself. This implies that he gathered his courage and resolve to take action against Athaliah’s oppressive rule. Jehoiada recognised the importance of restoring the rightful king and the true worship of God in Judah.

The Covenant:Jehoiada took the captains of hundreds, along with several other key individuals, into covenant with him. This covenant was likely a solemn agreement or oath to support and uphold the rightful king, Joash, as well as to restore the worship of the Lord according to the Mosaic law. This covenant formed a united front against Athaliah’s reign and ensured that the people and military leaders were committed to the cause.

Application:There are several lessons we can learn from this passage:

  • Courage and Determination:Jehoiada’s act of strengthening himself exemplifies the importance of courage and determination when faced with injustice or opposition. We should draw strength from God and stand firm in our faith, even in challenging circumstances.
  • Faithful Leadership:Jehoiada’s leadership played a pivotal role in restoring righteousness and true worship in the land. As leaders, we should strive to lead with integrity and guide others in following God’s ways.
  • Covenant with God:The covenant made by Jehoiada signifies the commitment to follow God’s commands and restore His rightful place in the lives of His people. In our own lives, we should enter into a personal covenant with God, committing ourselves to obeying His Word and seeking His guidance.
  • Restoration of Worship:The restoration of worship was a central aspect of Jehoiada’s efforts. Similarly, we should prioritise the worship of God in our lives, both individually and collectively. True worship involves honouring God, seeking His presence, and aligning our lives with His will.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 23:1 provides insight into the courage of Jehoiada and his efforts to restore the rightful king and worship of God in Judah. This passage encourages us to be courageous, exhibit faithful leadership, enter into a covenant with God, and prioritise the worship of the Lord in our lives.
