2 Chronicles 23:8
“So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.”
Context:The verse is part of the account of the coronation of Joash as the king of Judah. Joash was a young boy who ascended to the throne after the wicked Queen Athaliah was deposed. Jehoiada the priest played a crucial role in orchestrating this transition.
Jehoiada’s role:Jehoiada was a faithful priest who protected Joash from Athaliah’s purge of the royal family and cared for him in the temple until the time was right for him to be crowned. Jehoiada understood the importance of keeping the law of God and maintaining the proper worship of the Lord.
Sabbath observance:The verse specifically mentions the Sabbath and the actions taken by Jehoiada and the people. The Sabbath was a holy day in which no regular work was to be done, as commanded in the Mosaic Law (Exodus 20:8-11). Jehoiada made sure that the priests and Levites carried out their duties in the temple on the Sabbath, ensuring that the proper worship of God continued without interruption.
Faithfulness and obedience:The verse highlights the faithfulness and obedience of the Levites and the people of Judah. They followed Jehoiada’s instructions and fulfilled their roles, both those who were to come in on the Sabbath and those who were to go out. This demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s appointed leaders and the value of unity and cooperation among God’s people.
