2 Chronicles 24:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And when they were departed from him (for they left him in great diseases) his owne seruants conspired against him, for the blood of the sonnes of Iehoiada the Priest, and slewe him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the citie of Dauid, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the Kings. 2 Chronicles 24:25 (KJV)

Context: To understand the significance of 2 Chronicles 24:25, it is essential to examine the surrounding verses and historical background. In this chapter we read about Joash, the king of Judah. Joash began his reign at the age of seven and ruled for forty years in Jerusalem. Initially he was guided by Jehoiada, the high priest, who had a positive influence on him and helped restore the temple of the Lord.

Joash’s apostasy: Unfortunately, after the death of Jehoiada, Joash turned away from the Lord and began worshiping idols. He led Judah into idolatry and even allowed the killing of the prophet Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son. This act of rebellion against God’s commands marked a turning point in Joash’s life.

God’s judgment: As a result of Joash’s apostasy and the murder of the prophet Zechariah, God’s judgment fell upon him and his kingdom. Verse 25 records Joash being afflicted with severe diseases, a consequence of his disobedience and departure from God’s ways.

Betrayal and death: The verse also notes that Joash’s own servants conspired against him and killed him while he lay in bed. This betrayal further manifested God’s judgment. The fact that he was not buried in the sepulchres of the kings highlights the dishonor and disgrace brought upon him because of his actions.

Lessons to learn: The story of Joash serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of turning away from God and embracing idolatry. Though he once enjoyed godly influence through Jehoiada, Joash failed to remain steadfast in his faith. His life reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to God throughout our lives and not being swayed by worldly influences.

Consequences of sin: Joash’s downfall illustrates the principle that sin has consequences. God is just and righteous, holding us accountable for our actions. When we deviate from His path and engage in sinful behavior, we open ourselves to the repercussions of our choices.

The grace of God: Even in the face of Joash’s disobedience, God was merciful and forgiving. He sent prophets to warn Joash, seeking his repentance, yet Joash refused to listen and hardened his heart.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 24:25 teaches us about the consequences of turning away from God and embracing sinful ways. Joash’s life is a sobering reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and heeding His commands. It calls us to examine our own lives, seek God’s forgiveness when we stray, and strive to walk in obedience to Him.
