2 Chronicles 24:5

And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

2 Chronicles 24:5 (KJV)

This verse comes from the account of King Joash of Judah. Joash became king as a child under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, and his early reign was marked by doing what was right in the Lord’s sight. The temple had fallen into disrepair, so Joash gathered the priests and Levites to organize its restoration.

Joash gave clear orders: the priests and Levites were to travel to the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel for repairing the house of God. He stressed urgency with the words “see that ye hasten the matter.” Yet the verse closes with a sober note: “Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.” The king’s zeal contrasts sharply with the Levites’ delay.

The priests and Levites were the appointed caretakers of the temple. Joash involved them because their role was central to worship. The temple was not merely a building; it symbolized God’s presence among His people. Repairing it meant renewing the nation’s commitment to true worship.

Joash’s instruction to collect money “from year to year” shows that supporting the house of God was to be a regular practice, not a one-time effort. This pattern of consistent giving appears in the annual tithe commanded in Deuteronomy 14:22-23, which provided for the Levites and the worship of God. The Levites’ failure to act promptly also foreshadows the later need for a more effective collection method, which Jehoiada would implement (2 Chronicles 24:8-12).

This verse calls believers to examine their own diligence in God’s work. Delayed obedience can hinder the progress of His kingdom. The Levites had a clear command, yet they did not hurry. Their example warns against complacency and procrastination in spiritual duties.

Supporting the worship of God requires both leaders and the whole community. Joash involved the priests and Levites, and the people were asked to contribute. Faithful service involves shared responsibility and consistent giving, not sporadic effort.

When God gives a task, He values prompt obedience. The Levites’ delay reminds us that good intentions are not enough; action must follow. Consider whether any area of your life needs renewed urgency in serving God and maintaining His house.
