2 Chronicles 24:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And they made a proclamation through Iudah & Ierusalem, to bring in to the Lord, the collection that Moses the seruant of God laid vpon Israel in the wildernesse. 2 Chronicles 24:9 (KJV)

King Joash ascended to the throne of Judah at a young age and was guided by Jehoiada the priest. During Joash’s reign the temple of the Lord had fallen into disrepair because of neglect and plundering by previous kings, and Jehoiada initiated a restoration project that involved repairing and renovating the house of God.

The verse records that a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring in a collection for the Lord. This proclamation summoned the people to bring their contributions, echoing the command given by Moses in the wilderness for the Israelites to give offerings for the construction of the tabernacle.

The collection was in accordance with the instructions Moses, the servant of God, had given to Israel in the wilderness. By linking the present gathering to Moses’ earlier command, the passage highlights the continuity of worship practices from the tabernacle to the temple.

The people were encouraged to contribute according to their ability, reminding believers of the importance of stewardship—offering resources, talents, and time to serve God and support His work on earth.

The proclamation underscores the value of maintaining traditions established by faithful leaders. It calls us to respect the godly wisdom passed down by ancestors and to honor the practices that have sustained God’s people through generations.

The collection funded the restoration of the temple, demonstrating the significance of revitalizing places of worship and investing in the upkeep and growth of our spiritual communities so that they remain vibrant and centered on God.

The people of Judah responded to the proclamation by bringing their contributions, showing obedience and reverence for the Lord. Their response encourages us also to answer God’s commands with obedience, reverence, and worshipful offerings that honor Him.
