2 Chronicles 25:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Amaziah was twentie and fiue yeeres olde when hee began to reigne, and hee reigned twentie and nine yeeres in Ierusalem, and his mothers name was Iehoadan of Ierusalem. 2 Chronicles 25:1 (KJV)

Amaziah

was twenty and five years old

when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name

was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 Chronicles 25:1 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles is an Old Testament book that records the history of the kings of Judah. The verse introduces Amaziah, one of Judah’s monarchs, whose reign occurred after the kingdom of Israel had split into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. This division set the stage for the political and religious challenges that would shape his rule.

Amaziah’s Age: The text states that Amaziah was twenty‑five years old when he began to reign. In ancient Jewish culture it was customary for a man to attain the age of thirty before assuming major responsibilities such as a priestly office or, in some expectations, a royal throne. However, there was no formal age requirement for kings, and a twenty‑five‑year‑old accession was not unusual among Judah’s monarchs. Earlier kings, for example, began their reigns at even younger ages—Joash was installed on the throne at seven (2 Kings 11:21). Thus Amaziah’s age reflects a relatively typical youthful accession.

Length of Reign: Amaziah reigned for twenty‑nine years in Jerusalem. A reign of nearly three decades suggests a period of relative stability, allowing him the opportunity to implement various reforms, enact policies, and engage in military campaigns as recorded in the subsequent chapters of 2 Chronicles. The duration of his rule provides a framework for understanding the political continuity and challenges of his era.

Jehoaddan, Amaziah’s Mother: The verse also names Amaziah’s mother, Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. Although the biblical record offers few details about her, her mention indicates she held a significant role in his life and possibly in the royal household. In ancient royal contexts, mothers often exercised considerable influence, shaping the decisions and character of their sons, including kings.

By studying this verse we gain insight into the historical setting of Amaziah’s reign, his youthful accession at twenty‑5, the substantial twenty‑nine‑year tenure in Jerusalem, and the presence of his mother Jehoaddan. These details lay a foundation for deeper exploration of Amaziah’s actions and the events recorded in the following passages of 2 Chronicles.
