2 Chronicles 26:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the buriall which belonged to the kings: for they saide, He is a leper: And Iotham his sonne reigned in his stead. 2 Chronicles 26:23 (KJV)

Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was a king of Judah who reigned for 52 years. He began his reign at age 16 and was generally considered a good and prosperous king. However, toward the end of his reign, he became prideful and attempted to offer incense in the temple, which was a priestly duty. As a result, he was struck with leprosy by God and lived in isolation until his death.

Uzziah’s story serves as a warning about the dangers of pride. Initially, he sought God and followed His commandments, resulting in his success and prosperity. However, as his power and influence grew, he became proud and forgot that his success came from God. This led him to overstep his bounds and act in disobedience to God’s law. Uzziah’s pride and attempt to perform duties reserved for the priests resulted in his punishment of leprosy. Leprosy was a physical affliction that also represented the consequences of his spiritual condition.

Uzziah’s leprosy affected not only his physical health but also his position as king. He was isolated from society and lived separately until his death. The mention of Uzziah being buried with his fathers in the field of the burial belonging to the kings indicates that his reign ended in disgrace; he was not buried in the royal tombs but in a separate burial place within the royal burial field. This serves as a reminder that sin has consequences, even for those in positions of power. No matter how successful or influential a person may be, they are not exempt from the consequences of their actions.

Jotham, Uzziah’s son, succeeded him as king of Judah. Jotham reigned in his father’s place and continued to lead the nation. The transition of power from Uzziah to Jotham highlights the continuity of the kingdom despite the downfall of its previous ruler. It also emphasizes the importance of succession and the faithfulness of God in raising up leaders to continue His work.
