2 Chronicles 27:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did: howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.”

Historical Context: – This verse is part of the account of Jotham’s reign as king of Judah. Jotham was the son of Uzziah (also known as Azariah) and became king after his father was struck with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:23).

  • Uzziah had a generally positive reign and did what was right in the sight of the Lord until his pride led him to enter the temple unlawfully and offer incense, resulting in God afflicting him with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:16-21).
  • Jotham’s Righteousness:
  • The verse affirms that Jotham follows in the footsteps of his father Uzziah and did what was right in the sight of the Lord. He continued to implement righteous policies and reforms in the kingdom of Judah.
  • Jotham’s adherence to the Lord’s commands shows his commitment to God and his desire to lead the people in a way that pleased the Lord.
  • Jotham’s Temple Practices:
  • One significant aspect of Jotham’s reign mentioned in this verse is that he did not enter the temple of the Lord. This is in contrast to his father Uzziah, who transgressed by offering incense in the temple unlawfully.
  • It’s important to note that only the priests were authorized to perform the sacred duties within the temple. Uzziah’s actions were seen as a violation of God’s law, resulting in his punishment.
  • Jotham, learning from his father’s mistake, respected the sacred boundaries set by God and refrained from intruding into the priestly duties.
  • The People’s Corruption:
  • Despite Jotham’s righteousness, the verse mentions that the people continued to act corruptly. This indicates that even under a righteous king, the hearts of the people remained unchanged and they continued to engage in sinful practices.
  • Jotham’s personal righteousness did not necessarily guarantee the righteousness of the entire nation. It highlights the importance of individual accountability and personal devotion to God.

Application:

  • Jotham’s commitment to righteousness and his refusal to enter the temple remind us of the importance of respecting God’s boundaries and honoring the roles He has assigned to different individuals.
  • We can learn from Jotham’s example by striving to do what is right in God’s sight, following His commands, and avoiding presumptuous actions that go against His will.
  • The verse also serves as a reminder that our personal righteousness does not absolve others of their own responsibility. We should continue to live faithfully before God, even if those around us choose to act corruptly.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 27:2 portrays Jotham’s righteousness and his decision to honour God’s laws by not entering the temple. It also highlights the ongoing corruption of the people despite his righteous reign. This verse teaches us about personal obedience, respect for God’s boundaries, and the importance of individual accountability in our relationship with God.
