2 Chronicles 28:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

For Ahaz tooke away a portion out of the house of the Lord, and out of the house of the King, and of the Princes, and gaue it vnto the King of Assyria: but he helped him not. 2 Chronicles 28:21 (KJV)

Context and Background: 2 Chronicles is a book in the Old Testament that provides a historical account of the kings of Judah, particularly focusing on their faithfulness or unfaithfulness to God. The verse in question is situated in the context of King Ahaz’s reign.

Understanding the Verse:

Ahaz’s Actions: The verse begins by stating that Ahaz took away a portion from the house of the Lord and the royal palace, likely referring to the treasures and valuables within these places. This action indicates Ahaz’s desperate attempt to form an alliance with the king of Assyria by offering him these resources.

Assistance Denied: Despite Ahaz’s efforts to seek help from the king of Assyria, the verse concludes by stating that the king of Assyria did not help him. This indicates that Ahaz’s attempt to forge an alliance was futile and did not bring him the assistance he desired.

Historical Significance:

This verse highlights the consequences of Ahaz’s unfaithfulness to God. Instead of seeking God’s guidance and protection, Ahaz turned to worldly powers for support. Taking treasures from the house of the Lord and the palace displayed Ahaz’s lack of trust in God and his failure to recognize that the Lord was the true source of strength and security for Judah.

Furthermore, Ahaz’s failed alliance with Assyria would later lead to significant consequences for the kingdom of Judah. Assyria eventually attacked and subjugated Judah, bringing devastation and exile upon its people.

Lessons and Application:

Trusting God: The verse reminds us of the importance of placing our trust in God rather than relying solely on human alliances or worldly resources. As believers, we should seek God’s guidance and depend on His strength rather than trusting in our own abilities or seeking support from sources that contradict His principles.

Faithfulness and Consequences: Ahaz’s actions had severe consequences for himself and his kingdom. This serves as a reminder that our decisions and actions have implications and can lead to either blessings or hardships. It underscores the importance of faithfulness to God’s commands and seeking His will in all aspects of our lives.

Seeking God’s Provision: When faced with challenges or difficult situations, we should first turn to God in prayer and seek His provision. He is our ultimate provider, and He promises to help and guide those who trust in Him. We should avoid the temptation to rely solely on worldly solutions but instead seek the wisdom and direction that comes from a relationship with God.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 28:21 provides a valuable lesson about the consequences of seeking worldly alliances instead of relying on God. It calls us to place our trust in God, seek His guidance, and remain faithful to His commands, knowing that He alone is the source of true strength and security.
