2 Chronicles 3:12
“And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was five cubits also, joining to the wing of the other cherub.”
Context:The verse is part of the description of King Solomon’s construction of the temple in Jerusalem. It specifically focuses on the details of the cherubim, which were intricate angelic figures that adorned the inner sanctuary of the temple.
Symbolism of the Cherubim:Cherubim are often associated with the presence and glory of God. In the Bible, they are depicted as majestic beings with wings and are seen as guardians or attendants in the heavenly realm. The presence of cherubim in the temple signified God’s presence and the sacredness of the place.
Symmetry and Unity:The verse highlights the symmetry and unity in the design of the cherubim. Each cherub had two wings, each measuring five cubits (approximately 7.5 feet or 2.3 meters) in length. The wings of one cherub reached to the wall of the house, while the other wing joined with the wing of the neighboring cherub. This description emphasizes the precision and attention to detail in Solomon’s construction, as well as the balanced and harmonious nature of God’s design.
- Attention to Detail:The meticulous description of the cherubim serves as a reminder of the importance of giving our best to God. Solomon’s attention to detail in constructing the temple reflects the honour and reverence he had for God. It teaches us to approach our worship and service to God with care and excellence.
- Unity and Harmony:The joining of the cherubim’s wings symbolises unity and harmony in God’s presence. Similarly, as believers, we are called to live in unity with fellow Christians, promoting harmony and love within the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:3). This verse reminds us of the significance of unity in our relationships and the impact it has on our spiritual journey.
- God’s Presence:The cherubim in the temple represented the presence of God among His people. Today, through Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of experiencing God’s presence within us through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). This verse reminds us of the profound truth that God dwells within His people, and we can seek His presence and guidance in our lives.
- Excellence:In our worship, service, and all aspects of our lives, we should strive for excellence. Giving our best to God showcases our love and dedication to Him.
- Unity and Love:We should prioritise unity and love in our relationships with other believers, seeking to promote harmony and understanding. Unity reflects the character of God and is essential for a strong and effective Christian community.
- Seeking God’s Presence:Recognise that God’s presence is not limited to a physical building but is within each believer. Seek a deeper relationship with God, inviting Him to be present and guide you in all areas of life.
