2 Chronicles 31:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And brought in the offerings and the tithes, and the dedicate things, faithfully: ouer which Cononiah the Leuite was ruler, and Shimei his brother was the next. 2 Chronicles 31:12 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of 2 Chronicles records the history of the kingdom of Judah, focusing especially on the reigns of David’s descendants. Chapter 31 describes King Hezekiah’s reforms, which restored proper worship and devotion to God after a period of neglect.

Worship and Offerings: Verse 12 shows the people of Judah bringing their offerings, tithes, and dedicated things to the temple. These contributions were essential to Israel’s worship and were intended to support the Levites and priests who served in the house of the LORD. The passage highlights the people’s recognition of the importance of giving to God and sustaining the work of the temple.

Faithfulness in Giving: The verse emphasizes the people’s faithful and willing attitude in bringing their offerings and tithes. Their dedication reveals a commitment to honor God with their resources, acknowledging that all they possessed ultimately belonged to Him. This faithful giving reflects a heart of gratitude and a desire to support the temple and its ministers.

The Role of Levites: Cononiah the Levite is identified as the ruler over the offerings, with his brother Shimei as the next in authority. Both were charged with overseeing the receipt, distribution, and proper handling of the contributions. Their leadership illustrates the crucial role of trustworthy Levites in administering worship, teaching the Law, and ensuring that the resources reached their intended purposes.

Lessons for Today: Although the passage refers to a specific historical setting, it offers timeless principles. It teaches the importance of generous, faithful giving to support the work of God, whether in the local church or broader ministry. It also underscores the need for reliable, responsible leaders who can manage resources wisely for God’s purposes.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 31:12 provides insight into the willing giving of the people of Judah and the diligent oversight exercised by the Levites Cononiah and Shimei. The verse encourages believers to be faithful in their giving and to value trustworthy leadership in the stewardship of God’s blessings.
