2 Chronicles 31:15
And next him were Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
2 Chronicles 31:15 (KJV)
Context
King Hezekiah restored true worship after his father Ahaz had turned from the Lord. He reopened the temple and reorganized the priests and Levites. This verse names six men appointed to distribute offerings and tithes among the priests in their cities.
Meaning
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah served under Kore, who was in charge of the freewill offerings (2 Chronicles 31:14). Their “set office” was a trusted duty. They gave to their brethren “by courses,” meaning by scheduled divisions, so that every priest received his share. The phrase “as well to the great as to the small” shows that no one was overlooked, whether older or younger, or of higher or lower rank.
Biblical connections
This careful distribution reflects the principle that God’s servants should be provided for fairly. Paul teaches that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:14). Here, the orderly system ensured that all who served the temple were sustained.
Application
Faithful stewardship requires organization and trustworthiness. Hezekiah appointed reliable men to handle God’s resources. In our churches and daily lives, we should manage what God entrusts to us with honesty and fairness, ensuring that everyone is cared for, not just the prominent.
Reflection
God notices the small as well as the great. This verse reminds us that serving behind the scenes, like distributing provisions, is valuable in His sight. We can ask ourselves: Are we faithful in the duties God gives us, even when they seem ordinary? Do we treat every person with equal dignity and care?
