2 Chronicles 31:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

He appointed also the kings portion of his substance, for the burnt offrings, to wit, for the morning and euening burnt offrings; and the burnt offrings for the Sabbaths, and for the Newmoones, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the Law of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 31:3 (KJV)

Context: In this verse we see King Hezekiah of Judah implementing reforms to restore proper worship of God in the kingdom. Hezekiah sought to bring the people back to observance of the Law of the Lord, including the regulations for offerings and sacrifices.

Faithful Leadership: Hezekiah’s appointment of the king’s portion from his own substance for the various burnt offerings demonstrates his commitment to lead by example. As king he took personal responsibility for the worship of God and for providing the offerings, showing concern not only for his own faith but for the spiritual well‑being of the entire nation.

Observance of Worship: The passage highlights the importance of regular, prescribed worship. Burnt offerings were offered twice daily—morning and evening—and also on the Sabbaths, new moons, and set feasts according to the Law. These sacrifices expressed devotion, thanksgiving, and atonement, and Hezekiah ensured they were faithfully carried out, underscoring the significance of consistent worship and obedience to God’s commands.

Faithfulness to God’s Law: The verse records that the offerings were made “as it is written in the law of the LORD.” Hezekiah’s adherence to the specific timing and nature of the burnt offerings shows his desire to align the nation’s practices with God’s covenant requirements.

Application to Our Lives: Although the detailed regulations for burnt offerings are not directly applicable to us today, the principles endure. First, we should prioritize regular worship and devotion to God, both individually and corporately. Second, as leaders in our spheres we are called to lead by example and take responsibility for the spiritual health of those around us. Third, we must seek to align our lives with Scripture and faithfully obey God’s commands.

Conclusion: 2 Chronicles 31:3 reminds us of the importance of faithful leadership, the observance of worship, and obedience to God’s Law. It encourages us to prioritize our relationship with God and to live in accordance with His Word.
