2 Chronicles 31:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the Lord his God.”

Context: The Book of 2 Chronicles is a historical record of the kings of Judah, focusing primarily on the reigns of David’s descendants. This particular verse is part of a section that describes the reforms implemented by King Hezekiah after he ascended to the throne.

King Hezekiah: Hezekiah was a righteous king who ruled over Judah from approximately 715 to 686 BC. He came to the throne at a time when Judah was spiritually and morally corrupt. However, Hezekiah sought to bring about a revival and restoration of worship in the land.

Wrought that which was good and right and truth: This phrase emphasizes Hezekiah’s commitment to leading the nation in accordance with God’s will. It highlights three key aspects of his reign:

  • – Good: Hezekiah pursued actions that were morally upright and pleasing to God. He sought to promote righteousness and integrity among the people.
  • – Right: Hezekiah was concerned with implementing justice and fairness in his governance. He sought to rule in alignment with God’s laws and commandments.
  • – Truth: Hezekiah upheld the truth of God’s Word and taught it to the people. He promoted the study and application of God’s laws, seeking to counter the false religious practices that had taken root in Judah.

Before the Lord his God: Hezekiah’s actions were not motivated by political gain or personal glory. Instead, his primary focus was to please and honor God. He recognized that he was accountable to God for his leadership and sought to carry out his duties faithfully in God’s presence.

  • Commitment to righteousness: Like Hezekiah, we should strive to do what is good, right, and true in the sight of God. Our actions should reflect integrity, righteousness, and justice.
  • Seeking God’s guidance: Hezekiah’s example encourages us to seek God’s guidance in our lives and leadership. We should align ourselves with God’s Word and follow His principles, seeking His will above all else.
  • Leading with a higher purpose: Hezekiah’s focus on serving God rather than personal ambitions serves as a reminder that leadership is ultimately about serving others and glorifying God. As leaders in our spheres of influence, we should prioritize the well-being and spiritual growth of those we lead.
