2 Chronicles 31:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Also of the sons of Aaron the priests, which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities, in every several city, the men that were expressed by name, to give portions to all the males among the priests, and to all that were reckoned by genealogies among the Levites.”

2 Chronicles 31:19 (KJV)

Historical Context:2 Chronicles is a book that focuses on the history of the kings of Judah, particularly the reign of King Hezekiah. In this chapter, King Hezekiah leads the people of Judah in a spiritual revival, restoring the temple worship and cleansing the land from idolatry.

  • Role of the Priests and Levites:

In verse 19, we see a description of the responsibilities of the priests and Levites. The priests were descendants of Aaron, responsible for offering sacrifices and conducting the rituals of worship in the temple. The Levites were from the tribe of Levi and served as assistants to the priests, taking care of various tasks related to the temple service.

Provision for the Priests and Levites:The verse mentions that the priests and Levites were given portions. This refers to their provision from the tithes and offerings brought by the people. The priests and Levites did not receive land as an inheritance like the other tribes of Israel, so they relied on the offerings of the people for their livelihood.

Importance of Genealogies:The verse highlights that the portions were given specifically to those who were reckoned by genealogies among the Levites. This emphasizes the importance of maintaining accurate records of their lineage. The genealogies were significant because certain roles and privileges were assigned based on one’s lineage, particularly in relation to the priesthood and temple service.

Lessons for Today:

  • Faithful Provision:The passage reminds us of the importance of providing for those who are dedicated to full-time ministry and service in the house of God. Just as the people of Judah supported the priests and Levites, believers today are encouraged to give generously to support pastors, missionaries, and others who serve in ministry.
  • Recognition of Lineage:While genealogies may not hold the same significance in modern times, the passage highlights the importance of recognizing and honoring the roles and responsibilities of individuals within the church. Every member has a unique role to play, and it is essential to appreciate the diversity of gifts and callings within the body of Christ.
  • Commitment to Worship:The spiritual revival led by King Hezekiah involved restoring the proper worship of God. As believers, we are called to be diligent in our worship, both individually and corporately. We should seek to honor God with our whole lives and participate actively in the worship and service of the church.

Remember, it is essential to read the Bible in its entirety and consider the surrounding verses and chapters to fully understand the context and message of any particular passage.
