2 Chronicles 31:18

And to the genealogy of all their little ones, their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, through all the congregation: for in their set office they sanctified themselves in holiness:

2 Chronicles 31:18 (KJV)

This verse belongs to King Hezekiah’s reforms in Judah. He cleansed the temple, restored true worship, and made sure the priests and Levites received their share of the tithes and offerings. The people’s generous giving supported those who served in God’s house. This registration was part of a larger effort to renew the nation’s covenant with God.

The verse records the official registration of every Levite family, including their little ones, wives, sons, and daughters. This careful listing shows that the whole congregation recognized each household. The Levites were not forgotten; their families were counted and provided for. The phrase “in their set office they sanctified themselves in holiness” means that in their appointed duties, the Levites dedicated themselves fully to God. Their service was not casual but holy and faithful. Sanctification here is not only personal; it happens within the role God gives each person.

This care for the Levites echoes the command that those who serve at the altar should share in its offerings, as seen in 1 Corinthians 9:13-14. The principle is clear: God’s workers deserve practical support from the community they serve. The inclusion of all family members also reflects the holistic nature of faith, where every individual is valued.

First, we should honor and support those who minister among us, not only in words but with practical help. Second, the inclusion of every family member reminds us that faith is lived together. Children and parents alike are part of God’s people. Third, the Levites’ holiness in their set office challenges us to treat our own responsibilities, whether in church, home, or work, as sacred duties done for God.

Do we see our daily tasks as holy service? Are we faithful in the role God has given us, and do we care for those who serve on our behalf? May we, like the Levites, sanctify ourselves in whatever work God has assigned.
