2 Chronicles 31:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 31:5 is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah. Hezekiah was a righteous king who sought to restore proper worship and obedience to God. In this verse, we see the response of the people of Israel to the commandment issued by Hezekiah to bring their offerings and tithes to the house of the Lord.

  • Importance of Firstfruits:

The firstfruits were a significant aspect of Israel’s religious practices. It was the offering of the first and best of the harvest to God as an act of worship and acknowledgment that all blessings come from Him. By offering the firstfruits, the people demonstrated their trust in God’s provision and their gratitude for His blessings.

Abundance and Generosity: The verse highlights the abundance and generosity of the people’s offerings. The children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, oil, honey, and all the increase of the field. Their response was not meager or reluctant; instead, they gave generously and with a joyful heart.

The Tithe: In addition to the firstfruits, the people also brought the tithe of all things abundantly. The tithe referred to the tenth part of their produce or income, which was set apart for the maintenance of the priests and Levites who served in the temple. The people recognized the importance of supporting the religious leaders and the work of the house of the Lord.

Application:

  • Gratitude and Trust: This passage reminds us of the importance of expressing gratitude to God for His blessings. It teaches us to acknowledge that everything we have comes from Him. By giving our first and best to God, we demonstrate our trust in His provision and faithfulness.
  • Generosity: The example of the Israelites in bringing their offerings abundantly challenges us to be generous in our giving. Our offerings should not be given begrudgingly or with a stingy heart but with joy and a willingness to bless others and support the work of God’s kingdom.
  • Faithful Stewardship: The concept of tithing is reiterated in this verse. While the New Testament does not prescribe a strict tithe, it encourages believers to give sacrificially and cheerfully. We are called to be faithful stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us, using them wisely to advance His kingdom and support the work of the church.
  • Obedience to God’s Commands: Hezekiah’s commandment to bring the offerings and tithes was a call to obedience. Similarly, as followers of Christ, we are called to obey God’s commands, including giving to support His work and the needs of others. Our obedience reflects our love for God and our commitment to His purposes.

Remember that studying a single verse is just one aspect of understanding Scripture. It’s essential to read the entire chapter or book to grasp the full context and meaning. Consider consulting commentaries or seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to deepen your understanding of the passage.
