2 Chronicles 31:6

And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the Lord their God, and laid them by heaps.

2 Chronicles 31:6 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the reforms of King Hezekiah, a righteous ruler who led Judah back to the Lord after the neglect of his father Ahaz. He commanded the people to bring their firstfruits and tithes, and they responded generously. In verse 5, they offered the firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and all the field’s increase. Verse 6 shows that the children of Israel and Judah living in the cities of Judah also brought tithes of oxen and sheep, plus the tithe of holy things consecrated to the Lord, and laid them in heaps.

The tithe was a tenth of one’s produce and livestock, set apart for God. The “holy things” were offerings and items consecrated for temple service. By bringing these, the people supplied the Levites and priests, enabling worship to continue. The heaps of offerings show the great quantity and the people’s wholehearted response. Their giving was not merely legal duty but a joyful act of worship and trust in God’s provision.

This passage connects to the recent Passover celebration under Hezekiah, when the people renewed their covenant with God. True revival included practical support for the temple. The mention of both Israel and Judah indicates unity among God’s people. Their generosity reflects the principle that when leaders call for reform, the people can respond with devotion.

For believers today, the New Testament does not impose a legal tithe, but the underlying principles remain. Christians are called to generous, cheerful, and sacrificial giving, recognizing that all possessions belong to God. Our giving should be consecrated, set apart for His purposes. The heaps of tithes served as a tangible testimony that God was honored and that He provided through collective giving.

Hezekiah’s reforms and the people’s response encourage us to prioritize the Lord in our lives. When we give back a portion of our blessings as an act of worship, we demonstrate faithfulness and trust in God’s continued provision. May our generosity be as visible and abundant as the heaps of old, supporting the work of the Lord and blessing the community of faith.
