2 Chronicles 31:7
“In the third month they began to lay the foundation of the heaps, and finished them in the seventh month.”
This verse is part of the narrative describing the reforms instituted by King Hezekiah in the Kingdom of Judah. Hezekiah was a righteous king who sought to restore proper worship and obedience to God among the people of Judah.
To understand the significance of this verse, we need to look at the context and the events leading up to it. In the preceding verses (2 Chronicles 31:2-6), we learn that King Hezekiah directed the priests and Levites to reestablish their responsibilities in the temple and to reinstitute the offerings and tithes that were to be given to the Lord.
In verse 5, we read that the people responded faithfully to Hezekiah’s command and brought their tithes, offerings, and dedicated things in abundance. The people’s obedience and generosity resulted in heaps of provisions piling up in the temple.
Verse 7 specifically mentions that the foundation of these heaps was laid in the third month and finished in the seventh month. This implies that it took a considerable amount of time for the people to bring their offerings, and as a result, the heaps of provisions grew.
This verse illustrates several important principles:
Obedience and faithfulness:King Hezekiah’s call for the people to bring their tithes and offerings was met with obedience and faithfulness. The people willingly responded and brought their offerings in abundance, reflecting their commitment to the Lord and their desire to support the temple and its ministries. This emphasises the importance of obedience and faithful stewardship in our relationship with God.
Provision and abundance:The heaps of provisions in the temple symbolise God’s abundant provision for His people when they prioritise His worship and follow His commands. When we honour God with our tithes and offerings, we open ourselves up to His blessings and provision in our lives.
Time and commitment:The fact that it took several months to complete the accumulation of the heaps highlights the people’s commitment to the process. They were willing to take the necessary time to fulfil their responsibilities and give generously to the Lord. This reminds us that obedience and serving God often require patience, persistence, and a long‑term commitment.
Overall, 2 Chronicles 31:7 teaches us about the importance of obedience, faithful stewardship, God’s provision, and the commitment required in our relationship with Him. It encourages us to be diligent in our worship and to trust in God’s faithfulness as we honour Him with our resources.
