2 Chronicles 32:24

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.”

Verse: “In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.” (2 Chronicles 32:24, KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 32:24 takes place during the reign of King Hezekiah, one of the righteous kings of Judah. Hezekiah reigned over Judah from around 715 BC to 686 BC. During his reign, he faced several challenges, including the invasion of Judah by the Assyrian army under King Sennacherib.

  • Hezekiah’s Sickness:

This verse mentions that Hezekiah became critically ill to the point of death. It is important to note that this event is also recorded in the book of Isaiah (Isaiah 38:1-8). Hezekiah’s sickness is not specified in detail, but it was severe enough for him to face the reality of death.

Prayer: When faced with this dire situation, Hezekiah turned to the Lord in prayer. He sought God’s intervention and mercy. This demonstrates his deep faith and reliance on God in times of trouble. Hezekiah’s prayer in Isaiah 38:2-3 reveals his plea for healing and restoration.

God’s Response: In response to Hezekiah’s prayer, God spoke to him and granted him a sign. The sign was connected to Hezekiah’s healing. In Isaiah 38:4-8, the sign was a promise that Hezekiah would be healed and that the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz would either advance ten degrees or go back ten degrees as a confirmation of God’s intervention.

Lessons from 2 Chronicles 32:24:

  • The Power of Prayer: Hezekiah’s example teaches us the power and importance of prayer in difficult times. It is essential to seek God and lay our burdens before Him, knowing that He is attentive to our cries.
  • God’s Response: Hezekiah’s experience reminds us that God hears and responds to the prayers of His people. Although God’s response may not always be in the form of a miraculous sign, we can trust that He works in ways that are best for us.
  • Trusting God’s Promises: Hezekiah received a sign as an assurance of God’s promise of healing. Likewise, we can trust in the promises of God’s Word, knowing that He is faithful and true to His Word.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 32:24 highlights Hezekiah’s faith, his prayer in a time of distress, and God’s response to his plea. It encourages us to trust in God’s power and seek Him wholeheartedly, knowing that He hears and answers our prayers.
