2 Chronicles 32:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.”

Historical Context:The passage takes place during the reign of Hezekiah, who was a righteous king of Judah. Hezekiah had experienced a miraculous deliverance when God helped him defeat the Assyrian army led by Sennacherib, which had besieged Jerusalem. However, after this victory, Hezekiah’s heart became proud, and he did not respond with gratitude and obedience to God.

God’s Blessings and Human Response:The verse highlights how God had shown great favour to Hezekiah by delivering him and his kingdom from a powerful enemy. God’s intervention was a testament to His faithfulness and power. However, despite the benefit received, Hezekiah’s heart was lifted up with pride instead of humbly acknowledging God’s hand in the victory.

Consequences of Pride:Hezekiah’s pride resulted in God’s wrath not only upon him but also upon Judah and Jerusalem. This demonstrates the principle that pride is displeasing to God and has negative consequences. Pride leads to a self‑centred focus, a disregard for God’s sovereignty, and a failure to acknowledge His blessings. It can lead to a breakdown in our relationship with God and a loss of His favour.

Lessons for Today:This passage serves as a reminder to guard against pride in our lives. We should cultivate a heart of humility, recognising that every good thing we receive comes from God. Pride can blind us to our dependence on Him and hinder our ability to give thanks and respond in obedience to His guidance.

Gratitude and Obedience:When God blesses us, it is important to respond with gratitude, acknowledging His goodness and faithfulness. We should avoid the trap of taking His blessings for granted and falling into a sense of entitlement. Instead, let us cultivate a spirit of humility, recognising that everything we have is a gift from God.

God’s Mercy and Restoration:Despite the consequences of Hezekiah’s pride, God’s grace and mercy are evident in the larger context of his life. Hezekiah humbled himself before God, and God extended his life and brought healing. This shows that even when we fail, God is gracious and willing to restore us when we turn back to Him with a repentant heart.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 32:25 serves as a cautionary tale against pride and a reminder of the importance of humility, gratitude, and obedience in our relationship with God. May we always remember to acknowledge His blessings, guard against pride, and respond with a heart of humility and gratitude.
