2 Chronicles 32:29

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Moreouer, hee prouided him cities, and possessions of flockes & heards in abundance: for God had giuen him substance very much. 2 Chronicles 32:29 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah. Hezekiah was a righteous king who sought to honour God and restore the worship of Yahweh in the land. The verse describes how God blessed Hezekiah, providing him with great wealth and abundance.

God’s Provision: The verse begins with the statement that God provided Hezekiah with cities and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance, and also gave him the cities which were in the mountains, a great store of money, wheat, barley, oil, wine, cattle, sheep, goats, and a very great abundance of all things. This highlights God’s ability and willingness to provide for His people and reminds us that He is the ultimate source of all blessings.

God’s Sovereignty: By listing the many gifts—cities, livestock, grain, oil, wine, and a great store of wealth—the passage emphasizes that it was God who gave Hezekiah such riches. It underscores God’s sovereignty and His power to bless individuals according to His purpose, showing that Hezekiah’s prosperity was ultimately attributed to God’s gracious provision.

Faithfulness Rewarded: Hezekiah was known for his faithfulness to God. He removed the high places, destroyed idols, and restored proper worship in Judah. God honoured Hezekiah’s faithfulness by blessing him materially, demonstrating the biblical principle that when we seek God and prioritise His ways, He rewards us in various ways, not limited to material blessings.

Stewardship: Hezekiah’s wealth was not merely for personal gain; it also had a broader purpose. He was entrusted with cities, flocks, and herds, implying a responsibility to manage and use these resources wisely. As believers, we are called to be faithful stewards of the blessings God has given us, using our resources for the glory of God, to benefit others, and to advance His kingdom.

Gratitude and Acknowledgment: This verse reminds us of the importance of recognising God’s hand in our blessings. Hezekiah acknowledged that the substance he received came from God. It is crucial to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and acknowledge God as the source of our provisions. Recognising God’s faithfulness leads us to trust Him more and strengthens our relationship with Him.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 32:29 teaches us about God’s provision, His sovereignty, the importance of stewardship and gratitude, and the truth that God rewards faithfulness. It calls us to honour Him with all that we have been entrusted.
