2 Chronicles 32:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.”

In order to understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to provide some context by examining the surrounding verses and understanding the historical background.

Chronicles 32:24-26 states: “In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign. But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.”

These verses describe the events surrounding King Hezekiah’s illness and his subsequent healing. Hezekiah was a righteous king of Judah who sought to bring about religious reforms and turn the people back to the worship of the true God. In his pride, however, he did not respond with appropriate gratitude and humility when God extended his life. As a consequence, God’s wrath was pronounced upon him and the people.

Now, let’s look specifically at 2 Chronicles 32:28: “Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.”

This verse reveals one of the actions taken by King Hezekiah after he humbled himself before God. He implemented measures to ensure the prosperity and security of the kingdom. He constructed storehouses to store grain, wine, and oil, as well as stalls for animals and cotes for flocks. These provisions were essential for the sustenance and stability of the nation, particularly in times of adversity such as potential famines or sieges.

Hezekiah’s actions in preparing storehouses and shelters for animals demonstrate his commitment to good governance and his desire to protect the well‑being of his people. By implementing these measures, he aimed to ensure that the kingdom would have sufficient supplies during times of scarcity or conflict. This was a practical expression of his leadership and responsibility as a king.

Moreover, Hezekiah’s actions in providing for the needs of his people align with the biblical principles of stewardship, wise planning, and preparation. In Proverbs 21:20, it says, “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Hezekiah’s preparations can be seen as an example of wise stewardship and responsible leadership.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 32:28 highlights King Hezekiah’s efforts to ensure the prosperity and security of the kingdom by constructing storehouses, stalls, and cotes to provide for the people’s needs. It serves as a reminder of the importance of wise planning, preparation, and responsible leadership, as well as the principle of stewardship.
