2 Chronicles 32:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.”

Verse: “He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.”

Historical Context:

2 Chronicles 32:3 is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah. During this time, the Assyrian Empire, under the leadership of King Sennacherib, launched a military campaign to conquer various nations, including Judah. Sennacherib’s forces had already captured and exiled the northern kingdom of Israel. Now, they threatened to invade and conquer the southern kingdom of Judah.

  • King Hezekiah’s Response:

In the face of the Assyrian threat, King Hezekiah took counsel with his princes and mighty men. He sought wise advice and devised strategies to protect the city of Jerusalem. One of the strategies mentioned in this verse was to stop the waters of the fountains located outside the city walls. By doing so, they aimed to prevent the invading army from finding an easily accessible water source.

Trusting in Human Counsel:This verse highlights Hezekiah’s reliance on his advisors and military leaders. Seeking counsel is an important aspect of leadership, and Hezekiah demonstrated wisdom in consulting with his princes and mighty men.

Strategic Planning and Preparation:The fact that Hezekiah and his advisors devised a plan to stop the waters indicates their proactive approach to defense. They recognized the importance of careful preparation and strategic thinking in the face of a formidable enemy.

God’s Assistance:Although this verse does not explicitly mention God’s involvement, it is important to note that throughout the account of Hezekiah’s reign, God’s intervention and assistance are evident.

  • Seek godly counsel:Just as Hezekiah sought counsel from his princes and mighty men, it is wise to seek counsel from wise and godly individuals when facing challenges or important decisions.
  • Rely on God’s guidance:While human counsel is valuable, always remember to seek God’s guidance and trust in His wisdom above all.
  • Plan and prepare:Learn from Hezekiah’s strategic planning and preparation. In various areas of life, taking the time to plan and prepare can lead to better outcomes.
  • Trust in God’s providence:Even when facing seemingly insurmountable challenges, remember that God is able to intervene and work on your behalf.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and explore the rest of the chapter to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and the lessons it offers.
