2 Chronicles 4:20 (KJV)
Context
This verse describes part of the gold furnishings Solomon made for the temple in Jerusalem. The parallel account in 1 Kings 7:49 confirms that ten candlesticks of pure gold stood before the oracle, five on the right and five on the left. This arrangement followed God’s explicit design for worship.
Meaning
The candlesticks held lamps that were to burn continually. Their light symbolized the presence of God and the wisdom and guidance He gives to His people. The word “oracle” refers to the innermost room, the Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant rested. Placing the candlesticks before this most sacred place showed that God’s light was always near His dwelling.
The lamps were made of pure gold, which stressed their value and holiness. They were not merely decorative; they served a real purpose in the temple ritual. The phrase “after the manner” means the design and use followed God’s explicit instructions, as given in the law for the golden lampstand (Exodus 25:31-40). The continual burning before the Lord is a recurring theme, as seen in Leviticus 24:4, where the priest is to order the lamps on the pure candlestick before the Lord continually.
Biblical connections
Leviticus 24:4 teaches that the priest was to keep the lamps burning before the Lord continually. This repeated command shows that the light was a lasting sign of God’s faithful presence with Israel. The lampstands were not just furniture; they were a daily reminder of God’s holiness and care.
Application
God still calls His people to walk in His light. Just as the lamps burned steadily, believers are to remain constant in faith and obedience. The pure gold reminds us that worship should be offered with reverence and the best we have. Our lives, like the lamps, are to shine consistently before God and others.
Reflection
Consider how the light of God’s truth guides your daily decisions. The temple lampstands point to a greater reality: God Himself is the source of light and life for all who seek Him. Let that light burn continually in your heart.
